Watched the finale of Saturday Night Live’s season and it was wonderful, and kind of heartbreaking. Leaving the cast are Pete Davidson, Aidy Bryant, Kyle Mooney and Kate McKinnon!
I mean, okay, Kyle Mooney – I like him okay but he is not exactly a lynchpin of the group.
The other three, however. Yikes.
I remember when Aidy Bryant was new and they couldn’t seem to figure out what to do with her. She was always the housewife, librarian, prim miss. Then she changed all that and showed that fat people were people and could be just as sexy, crazy, and wild as everyone else – and when she teamed up with Kate McKinnon – it was the best.
Kate McKinnon was always a power to be reckoned with. She could play anyone, no matter the age or gender and do it brilliantly.
Pete Davidson went from being the stoner kid to being the heart of SNL by being honest and funny and owning his own fucked-up-edness.
This happens on SNL from time to time. They accumulate some mega-talent and then those people leave the show and it’s time to start the rebuild. And we all have to go through the growing pains as the cast members shake out and adjust and new people come in and the big talents move to the front – and then it’ll happen again.
And we all spend the next couple of years bitching about how SNL isn’t as good as it used to be. Until suddenly, it is.
So let’s all buckle up and hang in there and eventually, we’ll be talking about how wonderful [fill in the blank] is on SNL.
Plus (it seems) we will always have Kenan Thompson, and who doesn’t love Kenan?
