Okay, here we go again.
It seems the medication I take for my ITP (low platelets) isn’t working very well anymore. My latest reading was 33.
So bring on Atatrombopag. New prescription. New specialty prescription.
This does not bode well.
I am told that the prescription is sent to a main MyMichigan pharmacy center where they will deal with the insurance, etc. (because these drugs are hella expensive). Which must have happened, because I got a call from one of those people telling me the prescription would be going through Accredo! Yay! I already get my Eltrombopag (my current drug) through them. They know me, I know them.
Last night I go to the Accredo website. No prescription on record.
Fuck me.
Now, you may remember last January, my new hematologist’s office fucked up my refills for Eltrombopag and I ran out and my platelets went down to 12 (yep, 12, count ‘em). I so do not want to go through this again.
So I sent a message through the medical portal – not to my hematologist (oh no, because my current hematologist is not on my portal, I can only contact my old hematologist who went to West Branch full time and this other doctor took over here in Saginaw). But the message got through because this morning one of the nurses at my (new) hematologist’s office called to tell me she called around and my prescription is NOT going to Accredo (say what?) but Walgreen’s Specialty Pharmacy – per the instructions of my health insurance company.
Now, I stopped using Walgreens because they couldn’t fucking handle appointments for COVID boosters (I made an appointment, showed up, waited over an hour, only to be told they had no vaccines because they all expired and they had to throw them out and they didn’t know when they would have more. Yeah, this is the place of sterling reputation I want to handle my life-saving drugs.)
And, when the big SNAFU with my Eltrombopag happened, it happened because MyMichigan sent it to CVS Specialty who said they had the prescription, were handling it, and then just decided “Nope. Not it.” And never told anybody (including yours truly) that they were not going to fill the prescription – leading me to run out and you know the rest, so go ahead and sing along.
I have 17 pills left of Eltrombopag. No refills are coming.
I tried calling Walgreen’s Specialty to find out if they have the prescription and if they are going to fill it – for whatever reason, there are certain phone numbers that when I call them the people on the other line cannot hear me. Guess what one of those certain phone numbers turns out to be? Did you guess?
And people wonder why I’m so fucking moody all the time.
MyMichigan says to wait a week before worrying (yeah, I think I’ll get a jump on that if you don’t mind) – because yeah, let’s start worrying when I have 10 fucking pills left, and need a drug that is not readily available any-fucking-where.
I already apologized to my husband, because he’s the one who is going to have to live with me until this mess is straightened out – or, as I told him, live without me if it isn’t (I know a little dramatic) – but he just wanted to know which hospital should they take me to if he has to call 911. You gotta love an engineer, they’re so fucking practical.

Lordy- the problem of dealing with a giant chain drugstore! About 5 years ago, I needed to have a scrip filled for a controlled substance. Spent TWO WEEKS hunting for a pharmacy that had the drug. The first ones to refuse were CVS and Walgreens. I ended up with a mom & pop pharmacy connected to Cedars Sinai &.switched all my scrips (and there sre many )to them. Avoid those corporate giants whrnever possible – you’d be amazed how many indy places are likely in your indurance plan. Good luck, kiddo!
