I was thinking back to TV when I was (much) younger. The shows were all, basically, stand alone plots. Yes, there were recurring characters, but the issues were all resolved in the half hour or hour or two hours (remember those “Mystery Movies”?) that was allotted to them.
Now it seems all the shows require, what I call, the “Big Bad”. Some overarching enemy that may (or may not) be vanquished within an episode or three, or may be there for an entire season.
WTF?
You know what? We’re all living with the “Big Bad” right now. A fucking pandemic.
I don’t need a pretend “Big Bad” for my viewing enjoyment.
When I turn on the TV, I want to forget about Big Bad for a while.
I don’t want to have to worry about how the Big Bad lurking at the back of every episode, ready to come down and ruin every happy endings.
I don’t want to have to watch an entire season to what happens with the Big Bad.
Like the pandemic, Big Bads just wear me the fuck out.
Okay.
So can we just put the Big Bad on hold until the world in general is just a smidge cheerier?
(It doesn’t hurt to ask, right?)
