THIS FAT OLD LADY’S ALL ABOUT ME MONDAY – THIS SHOW IS TRYING TO KILL ME

I love the show I am currently in – A New Brain.

I have waited years and years for someone to be brave enough to put it on.

Finally, it’s here, and I got cast!

Not only did I get cast, I got, imho, the best female role in the show.

Now, I think this show is trying to kill me.

First, many illnesses have swept through the cast during the rehearsal process.

I dodged every one of those bullets.

Yay me.

So then a week before we open, the flu hits.

And although I got my flu shot, the flu shot is not guaranteed to stave off all flu.

We are in close quarters in both the dressing rooms and backstage, and constantly engage physically onstage.

Absolutely perfectly designed to pass a disease around.

And now, we are all pretty much in one stage or another of dealing with the flu.

Except, possibly, our Roger – Corey Miller – who is Mr. Perfection and I don’t think the flu virus would dare to try to tarnish his perfectness.

The flu hit us each at different stages.

I got through opening in fine fettle – but the day after … oh dear.

It was not pretty.

I took myself to Urgent Care, spent 2 hours and about $200 but left with Tamiflu (stops virus growth and shortens length of time you are sick) and Prednisone (which does wonders for the singer who is losing their voice).

So I made it through the last performance of the week (Sunday matinee), not in great voice, but at least able to get through it.

However, Sunday, as I entered the theater I missed the last three steps of the stairs going down to the dressing room.

Fuck me that hurt.

This fat old lady ended up smack down on all fours on the cement floor.

Yes, I was holding onto the handrail, but I was also wearing crocs – which are not the best for nimble stair climbing or descending.

I have a toe that is now lovely shades of red and purple from bending in directions toes were never meant to go and a tender scabby knee.

Also, I did something to the muscles or something because my right knee keeps wanting to go out on me – without warning and with extreme pain.

How fun is that?

Don’t know if it’s worth another trip to the doctor, or if I should just give it a little time.

But Mother of God (which I don’t believe in), I don’t know how much more I can take.

And is it all worth it to get to play Mother in A New Brain?

Bet your ass!

Come see this magnificent show with an amazing cast at Tabard Theatre, downtown San Jose, California.

No, I don’t have an extra arm – that’s our musical director and pianist – Sam!

  1. So pleased you got the role 🤗. How you coped through the illness I don’t know! I have only had flu once, and I pray (also a non believer 😁) i never get it again! Your poor toe! I totally believe a stubbed toe is one of the worst agonies!
