THIS FAT OLD LADY’S – I WAS THIS OLD WHEN I LEARNED THAT TURKEYS WHISTLE

Did you know turkeys whistle?

I sure as shit didn’t.

Dear husband and I are sitting in our family room, with the door to the sun porch open, and damn, if we didn’t hear somebody whistling in our backyard!  Repeatedly!

WTF?

Husband goes to investigate, and I hear him exclaim, “You have to come see this” or something like that.  So of course, I do have to come see this.

We have a backyard, maybe not full of turkeys, but certainly with an abundance of turkeys we have yet to witness since moving in here.  Three or four adults, and a whole passel of chicks!

Now, turkeys are not unknown in our neighborhood; but they are usually on the side of the road that abuts the Tittabawassee River (for a good time, get your GPS system to try to pronounce Tittabawassee).  How this extended family of birds got their feathered butts across that busy road boggles my mind (though, I will admit, my mind is pretty easily boggled of late).

They made their way around the side of the yard and back into the strip of woods that runs behind our property and we haven’t seen them since.  I haven’t seen any squirshed on the road, so I am hopeful they all made it back to their side of the road safe and sound.

And as for the whistling?  Husband dear hypothesizes that because they are free range, wild turkeys, they are happy birds and therefore whistle as they go about their birdie existence; whereas the birds being raised for future feasting are only capable of the forlorn gobble-gobble we are more familiar with.

My follow-up question is for my dear friend Ron, who lives across the road – you been missing any turkeys lately?

  1. Who knew? They’re nice looking birds, too — is it legal for you to use them for food? Those free range birds are delicious.

I’ll remember turkeys doing a chorus of “Whistle While You Work” – love the image. Thanks for the piece of information.

    • I don’t see why we couldn’t eat them – except, I’m not really that interested in being that personally involved with my food. I’ll just continue to either get my turkeys at the local Meijer or order one from Honey Baked Hams.
