THIS FAT OLD LADY’S ME MONDAY – MOVING COMPANIES – THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING.

So I (finally) got a handyman (thank you Thumbtack) to come out and look at our poor bed.

Ever since we moved, it has not been a happy bed.  It creaks and groans ominously (much like me).  The drawers (underneath) aren’t aligned properly and either stay slightly open or won’t open at all.

Someone along the way – either the moving people who took the bed apart or during the move, or the guy who put it together again, fucked up the bed.  The particle boards that run horizontally (and hold the tracks to the drawers), on one side of the bed (mine) have broken board at the top – just where the screws are supposed to go in and secure these boards to the side of the bed.

As you can imagine, that’s a problem.

Nobody wants a wibble-wobble bed.  Or at least not these two old farts; or bodies are wibbly-wobbly enough, thank you.

Also, the vertical don’t sit properly in the tracks at either end of the bed because those tracks are all fucked up.

Even if I had known about this damage, I wouldn’t have been able to make a claim because – did you know – moving companies do not cover any damage to particle board!

You have been warned.

They can (and in our case, did) beat the living piss out of your perfectly good furniture if it includes particle board!  Isn’t that special?

The good news is that this guy I found through Thumbtack was on time, is nice and really seems to know what he’s doing.  Fingers crossed.

I am going to be so happy to have a good handyman for stuff like this.  (Of course, my brother-in-law Bill and my sister Karon are both handy AF, and have helped us out so much but I hate to bother them all the time – they have lives too)

Now keep your fingers crossed that the window installation guy I found on Thumbtack is able to help us with our sunroom windows.

(And then I need a guy to clean the ducts and figure out why some rooms gets lots of air and heat but other rooms do not; and I need to replace my oven and stovetop …. Isn’t owning your own home a fucking adventure?)

  1. Remember the comedian Alan King? He used to show up on Ed Sullivan a lot. A few years after he & his wife bought their first house ( a real money pit somewhere on Long Island), he wrote a book: “Anyone Who Owns His Own Home…Deserves It!” Whenever I hear stories like yours, it’s the first thing that comes to mind. I’m a life-long renter but a one time property manager for big apartment complexes, so I do understand all the headaches. I wish you well with your new repair guy — fingers crossed!

    • My sister Linda is renting and it is a real blessing. She’s had to have her washer replaced twice, the property handyman comes and changes light bulbs for her(!), they just really keep on top of the maintenance. But it’s nice not to have rules about holes in the walls, and painting and stuff like that too.
