I’m getting my haircut the other day and chit chatting with my hairstylist, Kerrie Jo, as one does, and she tells me her daughter is really into theater tech and has joined SOFA at her school. And I ask, as one might, what is “SOFA”? Kerrie Jo doesn’t know so she texts her daughter and her daughter says it’s “Science of Forensic Arts”.
Um. What?
Kerrie Jo says, it’s the Drama Club.
Okay, that’s all well and good, but what does Drama Club have to do with the science of forensic arts? Why isn’t the group named something that makes sense, like Science of Fine Arts? We are both baffled and move on to other topics.
So I went home and Googled the term.
And I was right.
According to Wikipedia (and all the other sources I found) – Forensic art is used to assist law enforcement with the visual aspects of a case … The closest you get to the fine arts is as a forensic sketch artist or creating models related to crimes.
Then I realized that debate is often referred to “forensics” (which is weird too, but here we are) – so maybe it is “Science of Forsensics Art” – which could mean a speech and/or debate club.
So then I looked up the high school’s web page and was directed to the FB page for SOFA – Bay City Western Forensics. (Can you believe how deep down this rabbit hole I went?) Which would be well and good, except looking at the FB page, it’s not a debate team; it’s a drama club. A. Fucking. Drama. Club.
So I don’t know what pretentious weenie at this high school came up with this acronym, but imho it’s stupid and WRONG.
And it appears nobody seems to have even questioned it!
Just stop it. There’s nothing wrong with Drama Club; and the world doesn’t need any new useless acronyms. The government and its departments and agencies already turn out stupid acronyms at an alarming rate.
I don’t know why this is bugging me so much. But it is. (Does this make me a “Drama Queen”?)
Go ahead. Change my mind. Please, explain this to me.
And I have to admit, how good is my life that this is the only thing I could find to bitch about this week? Good times.
