THIS FAT OLD LADY’S THEATER TUESDAY – CARNIVAL

You know how they say you can find anything on the internet?

Well, they LIED.

What you cannot find are the lyrics to “Tanz Mit Mir” from the Broadway Musical Carnival by Bob Merrill.  Hell, Wikipedia doesn’t even list the song as being part of the show!

Rude.

I know this particular number was in the show because when JGHS, lo these many years ago, did Carnival, I, Peggy Pack, Nancy Mayville, and Terry (a tiny bit of a thing with the blondest blond hair you ever saw) – I don’t remember her name – were the Bluebird Girls and our big number was Tanz Mit Mir.  Peggy, Nancy and I were all sophomores and Terry was the freshest freshman you ever saw.

And we were GREAT.  We were hilarious.  We were okay and we didn’t stink up the place.

We wore blue leotards with white tights and had feathers and we sang this song –

Komen, komen, tanz, tanz, tanz mit mir, tanz mit mir.

Ich bin einen voglien.

Ich bir du bist behexen mit meinen tanzin

Zizzy-zing-zing, tanz mit mir

At least, that’s the closest I can come up with.  I’m sure I don’t have it exactly right and I challenge you to find it on the internet any-fucking-where.

Anyhow, that’s when I learned I was absolutely fearless on stage.  To go out onstage in the middle of those terrible teens, wearing a leotard on what I was sure was the biggest body in the school and dance around the stage being a pure fool – and I loved every second of it.

Hell, if I could do that, I could do anything.  And you got applause too.

What’s not to love?

  1. Damn, girl – you’re RIGHT!
About the only thing I can do with a computer is research, and I’m really GOOD. Have been poking around
for a while now & there’s not a word of that lyric to be found. Also noticed what you did, that the listing of songs on the original cast album (1961) doesn’t show the song, and it may be the ONLY album from that
era that I don’t own, or I’d have typed out the lyric & sent it along. Maybe someone out there in the Fatosphere has the album or knows the song & will kindly share it with you.

I gave it the ol’ college try!

  2. Thanks SO much for putting up the score! Suspected that someone had a copy.
I don’t know the show – saw it once, never did it & listened to the album maybe half a dozen times. Just now
found the song in the score, got out the German dictionary & looked up the lyric words that I didn’t know. Will
have to listen to the album again.

Again – thank you for sharing your bounty with the other musical theatre nerdlings.

  3. Thank you! I was a Bluebird girl in 1984 as a freshman and I’ve been looking for the lyrics for decades. So grateful!
